Ballacosnahan

Archaeology

Prehistoric flint scatter.

A substantial quantity of worked prehistoric flint and coarse stone tools was recovered from Ballacosnahan over the course of several visits by CH Cowley, from a location which he refered to only as 'Ballacosnahan Top Fields'. The location appears likely to relate to OS field nos 323 and 571, and the grid reference refers to a central point within this area for indicative purposes.

The antiquary Charles Harry Cowley was an avid collector of worked flint and coarse stone artefacts revealed by agricultural activity, mainly on farms located around Peel, and occasionally from further afield. He was active from 1900 until 1943. His entire collection of artefacts, together with a daybook cataloguing his discoveries, was later donated to Manx National Heritage.
