The site of a small 19th century lead mine is recorded in this area. Known as the Ohio or East Baldwin Mine, it lay in the East Baldwin valley 50 yards north of Ballawyllin mill, and began working around 1866. It proved a costly operation for little return: 'Mineral Statistics' recorded only 24.5 tons of lead ore and 39 tons 8 cwt of zinc-blende raised (in 1872 and 1874-75), and the workings struck 'a junction of veins with an exceedingly puzzling piece of ground', with productive ore confined to limited zones. The mine reached a depth of 92 fathoms by 1878, with an intention (apparently unfulfilled) to extend to 104 fathoms.
