Prince Rupert of the Rhine

Person

Prince Rupert of the Rhine (1619-1682) was the nephew of Charles I and commander of Royalist cavalry during the English Civil War. In May 1644, he led the force that stormed Bolton alongside James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby. His army then relieved Charlotte de la Trémouille's garrison at Lathom House, ending the first Parliamentary siege. Two months later, at Marston Moor, Rupert's defeat ended Royalist control of northern England and left the Stanley cause in Lancashire fatally exposed.
